A series of six documentaries, "EcoMalta", produced by the Biological Conservation Research Foundation (Bicref) last year, are being shown again on Net TV on Saturdays at 10.30 p.m. and on Sundays at 5.45 p.m., and on Super One on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 5.15 p.m. starting this month.

Bicref had produced the documentaries after winning an Ecotourism Award from the Ministry of Finance.

The documentaries are aimed at unravelling the local natural beauty the Maltese should be proud of and struggle to protect with every means possible.

Bicref is a non-governmental organisation that has assisted scientific work undertaken both coastally and offshore around the Maltese Islands for the past six years.

Projects, such as the Scuba/snorkel Biodiversity Project, initiated last summer and still ongoing this year in collaboration with dedicated scuba centres, allow for greater awareness and biological knowledge of the country's coastal biodiversity.

Last year Bicref's assistance to research focusing on the 25 mile zone conservation area allowed the foundation's members to see with their own eyes the wilderness and vulnerability of the seas.

Bicref worked toward increasing local and international awareness toward the need to appreciate all the life forms in the Mediterranean involving all sea-users from fishermen to sailing racers.

Malta signed numerous conventions and agreements that bound it to undertake effective conservation of its seas and vulnerable species.

Scientific conservation research and awareness were important steps towards the setting up of marine conservation areas and conservation management.

Bicref worked toward this aim and looked forward to the setting up of such conservation areas.

Bicref may be contacted at PO BOX 30 Hamrun.
