I agree with Joe Farrugia who suggested (August 23) that the best solution for the grave situation in Bugibba is the creation of a separate local council for bugibba and Qawra. This would also be of great benefit for the residents of St Paul's Bay and Xemxija.

The recent controversy about the extension of a pavement in Church Street has shown that what is good for Bugibba is not necessarily good for the old part of St Paul's Bay, which has suffered enough damage in the last few years. Criticism of neglect in the Bugibba area, complaints from residents of Xemxija, a low turnout of voters in the last local elections and, added to this, a lack of initiative on the part of the council to organise activities for the residents, especially sports activities for the young people of the area, all show that the council cannot cope with such a wide area.

The only solution is two councils, one for Bugibba and Qawra and the other for St Paul's Bay, Xemxija, Burmarrad and Wardija. After all Valletta and Floriana , Sliema and St Julian's, Rabat and Mdina, all have separate local councils.

The sooner the grave situation in St Paul's Bay and Bugibba is resolved the better for the benefit of the residents and most of all for the sake of tourism.
