David Pace, vice-president of the Kamra tal-Periti (KTP, Chamber of Architects) was unanimously elected secretary-general of the Union of Mediterranean Architects (umar) at its general assembly held in Turin recently.

Founded in 1994, UMAR represents more than 250,000 architects in all but two of the countries of the Mediterranean basin. The KTP is a founder member of UMAR.

It is presently concluding an agreement with the Bibliotheca Alex-andrina in Egypt for the setting up of a documentation and information centre on Mediterranean architecture within this prestigious building.

UMAR publishes a directory of schools of architecture in the Mediterranean, runs annual summer schools for students and lecturers, and has formed an association of students and young architects (asya-med).

It also organises regular meetings of deans of Mediterranean schools of architecture as well as various exhibitions and competitions for students and architects alike.

As secretary-general one of the main tasks of his term of office will be to secure a permanent seat for umar in one of the member countries. His obvious choice is Malta, since the activity generated would promote the country as a centre for the sharing of knowledge on Mediterranean architecture.
