A 17-year-old American girl studying in Malta has claimed with the police that a man tried to sexually assault her while she was being given a lift to her home in St Julian's.

The alleged incident took place in the early hours of Thursday morning.

A man is helping the police with their inquiries.

Investigations are being led by St Julian's police.
