The restoration of the main gate and the bastions of Senglea, considered to be the most important project of the moment, is costing Lm110,000.
The work is being funded by the Cottonera Rehabilitation Project of the resources and infrastructure ministry, in collaboration with the Restoration Unit.
The work consists of the conservation of the entire façade of the Senglea bastions, including both sides of St Anne Gate.
It also includes the improvement of the electricity system and the restoration of the paving of the gate and the walkway on the bastions, which is being carried out by government workers.
During his tour of the site, Resources and Infrastructure Minister Ninu Zammit said a substantial part of the restoration of the façade and parts of the gate were already complete.
Speaking of the current reorganisation of the Works Division to ensure that workers were utilised in a more efficient manner, Mr Zammit said other Cottonera projects were being lined up.
Other projects that are currently under way in the area include the restoration of the Rinella bastions in Kalkara, the re-paving of Triq San Mikiel in Cospicua, as well as the extensive works of the chapel dedicated to Our Saviour in Kalkara.
