After reading your editorial of August 12, in which you wrote about the introduction of compulsory rear seat belts, I failed to see the good news and moreover how our roads are going to be safer by this new measure.
Encouraging passengers to wear rear seat belts is a good thing to do and it helps to reduce injuries to passengers sitting at the back. Unfortunately, since front seat belts were introduced, road and fatal accidents on our roads today are more frequent than before.
I do agree with you, that something must be done to make our roads safer. Our law makers, the police and local wardens must do a better job and give a better service to the public. This can be done simply by enforcing our already existing traffic regulations against those who pose a daily threat to all of us.
Only in doing so will we have safer roads, otherwise we will only be introducing a new source of revenue. Finally, I would like to ask, how will it affect those families like mine with three or more children? Leave them back at home or risk being booked everytime we decide to go out? Correct me if I am wrong, is it true that in many European cities rear seat belts are not compulsory?
