Meat processing discussed

Federation of Industry director general Edwin Calleja recently met Dirk Dobbelaere, secretary general of Liaison Centre For the Meat Processing Industry in the EU (CLITRAVI).

Mr Calleja presented Mr Dobbelaere with a brief explanation of the Maltese economy in general and its current environmental problems, also touching on the debate on waste to energy incineration and the local pork breeding, slaughtering and processing sector.

Mr Calleja also outlined the volumes of local pork processing operations and highlighted the various limitations confronting the sector because of current regulations.

Mr Dobbelaere explained the mission of CLITRAVI, which is the central institution at Brussels level for all the national organisations of the EU member states and associate members in the meat processing industry, incorporating the interests of slaughterhouses, cutting plants, cold stores and meat processing plants.

Mr Calleja was accompanied by FOI pork processing sector group members Charles Pisani of Dewfresh Products Ltd, and Saverina Pisani of Mosta Bacon Co. Ltd, as well as FOI executive Cecilia Vella.
