Couple attack police officer, steal his car

The police were yesterday on the lookout for a known man and woman who attacked a police officer in Zurrieq and stole his patrol car.

The police said the incident involved a sergeant from the Birzebbuga district who was on patrol in Zurrieq at about 7.30 a.m. yesterday when he saw a man making obscene gestures at him.

The sergeant stopped and approached the man, who then started hitting him with a crash helmet. A woman who was with the man joined in, the police said.

The man then drove away in the police car, which was found slightly damaged about an hour later in Zabbar.

The police officer was taken to a health centre where he was found to be suffering from slight injuries.
