Catholic youth in Eurocontact 2003

A group of 60 youths from eight countries, all members of Catholic youth work organisations, yesterday participated in the official opening of Eurocontact 2003 at the Archbishop's Seminary, in Rabat.

Throughout the week, the participants will take part in a number of informal activities aimed at helping them appreciate the gifts given to them by God - a message that was highlighted by Bishop Annetto Depasquale during the opening ceremony.

The theme chosen for Eurocontact 2003 is Alitupa Zawadi (He gave us gifts).

Eurocontact 2003 is hosted in Malta by the Zghazagh Azzjoni Kattolika (Young Catholic Action), in collaboration with FIMCAP and is financed by the Youth programme of the EU.

ZAK Malta president Miriam Teuma said it was about time that both the Church and the government invested seriously in a youth service and recognised youth workers not only as volunteers but also as professionals in diverse projects.

Speaking about the importance of youth work, she said youths get to develop the skills and knowledge to make responsible choices, to interact socially and be compassionate.
