A Sta Venera man has been cleared of stealing a wallet from a parked car after a magistrate ruled that although he was found in the possession of some of the wallet's contents, it did not necessarily mean he had stolen it.
Joseph Grech, 38, was cleared of stealing Kathryn Jane Derbyshire's wallet containing traveller's cheques, a credit card and a passport in Qawra on May 19, 2001.
Police found Grech in the possession of Derbyshire's passport and a cheque but he denied stealing the items and said he found them on a pavement in Bugibba and intended to take them to the airport.
Magistrate Tonio Micallef Trigona ruled that just because Grech was in possession of the items, it did not mean he had stolen them.
