Sailing marathon starts today

The Vikings Sailing Club's 50-hour sailing marathon, which starts at 5 p.m. today at Haywharf in Floriana, could not have had a more appropriate sponsor - the Malta Maritime Authority.

The authority said it was glad to be associated with the charitable event, timed to coincide with its annual Safety at Sea Campaign, now at its peak.

The sponsorship was in line with the MMA's efforts to promote the enjoyment of the sea in a way that respects the safety of boat owners and swimmers.

A spokesman for the club said the marathon, in which children will be raising funds for charity while enjoying themselves practising sailing, was an ideal opportunity for both the MMA and the organisers to promote the campaign among the young participants and the general public.

During the marathon, special emphasis will be given to safety at sea.

The club is inviting the public to go out for a sail on one of the club's dinghies against a donation.

Proceeds from the marathon, which ends on Sunday at 7 p.m., will go towards the Ursuline Sisters Creche at Sliema.
