I would like to reply to what Kurt Guillaumier, the present mayor of San Gwann had to say (August 6). It was never my intention to show any disrespect towards the present council. I have great admiration for all those who dedicate their time and energy to improve their environment. Even after I retired after nine years of council work I had offered my services to help wherever necessary.
I merely wished to bring to the attention of the local authority the bad state of the San Gwann cart ruts in that they have not been cleaned for a long time. Previous councils always tried ways and means to have them cleaned of weeds. At the same time I wanted to draw the attention of authorities, like the museums department and the ministry for the environment which, in the past, had promised help but was never forthcoming.
I neither wanted to criticise the councillors nor do I expect any sort of perfection. The only criticism I would like to make now is that for the past three months I have been sending e-mails to the secretary to have the various boundary signs written properly. I have also spoken to two councillors about the matter, but the badly written signs are still up.
If I can make a suggestion, San Gwann council can certainly take up where we left when last year we twinned with the Monreale council who promised to help by obtaining funds from the EU for the rehabilitation of these cart ruts. A project brief presented by Joe Borg, lecturer at the university, is available and could be made use of when and if these necessary funds are obtained.
