The Malta Press Club is recommending guidelines by the PressWise Trust, the National Union of Journalists of the UK and Ireland and the International Federation of Journalists for media reporting of suicides.

TMPC said the aim of the guidelines was to assist print, broadcast and online journalists to appreciate the risks associated with suicide coverage and suggest simple ways of avoiding unnecessary harm. It said that if a suicide story merited coverage there should be space or time to let people know where they could get help if the issues affected them.

Newsrooms should ensure they had up-to-date contact details of support organisations that could provide advice or counselling.
