Ivan Zammit had reason to be happy yesterday as he marked the end a hefty six-month ban by signing a new four-year contract with Valletta. The 30-year-old former Malta midfielder was unable to take part in his team's 3-3 draw with Hibs in Monday's Lowenbrau Cup clash as his ban was due to expire that day.
The Malta FA had ordered a six-month ban on Zammit after his involvement in an altercation with match officials when serving as manager of a City youth team. He is now expected to make his comeback in Saturday's Lowenbrau Cup match against Birkirkara, his former club.
News that Zammit has committed his future to Valletta will have been welcomed by coach Atanas Marinov who is working to build a competitive side to challenge the likes of Sliema, Birkirkara and Hibs for the Premier League title.
Moreover, Marinov is equally keen to have his key players settling their contractual matters before the first leg of their UEFA Cup tie against Swiss side Neuchatel Xamax at Ta' Qali on Tuesday.
