The United States government has suspended the Transit Without Visa (TWOV) programme with immediate effect, the US Embassy said.

The TWOV programme previously allowed citizens of certain countries, including Malta, to make international airline connections in larger airports such as Miami, New York, and Los Angeles without a visa for the US.

All travellers entering the US in order to transit to another international destination would now be required to carry US visas.

The US Embassy said that persons who have already transited the US have until Saturday to complete the return leg of their journey without being subject to this restriction.

This measure does not affect citizens of those countries who are eligible to enter the US without US visas (visa waiver programme).

More information about this change of policy can be found on the US government's website.
