I refer to the letter 'Joke of the Day' (July 23) by Sebastian Mangion. I agree with him about the need for a thorough clean-up of the streets of Mosta, and indeed of the rest of Malta.

I wonder however, whether Mr Mangion has had any direct dialogue with the mayor of our town.

During the past weeks I spoke to the mayor several times about the lack of cleanliness in the part of Mosta where I live. He was very understanding and explained the difficulties he was encountering trying to find a replacement for the contractors he dismissed because of their inefficiency.

He (the mayor) came over personally to acquaint himself with the conditions prevailing in my part of Mosta.

More importantly, he did something about the situation there and then via his mobile phone.

Three days ago the new cleaners swept the streets around here and also removed the weeds.

I suggest to anybody who is not happy with their environment and other matters in Mosta, to talk to the mayor before complaining elsewhere.
