Kindly allow me to reply to the letter entitled Silent Floriana council by Joe Borg (July 14).

As regards the manner by means of which Sarria Street, Floriana was closed to traffic before and after the Elton John concert, in spite of what was stated by the correspondent, not only was this obscenity condoned by the traffic management directorate, (which directorate had issued permission to Jonastin Zammit to close Sarria Street as from June 18 to July 11), but also to add insult to injury, the Elton John concert organisers had just promised Floriana local council that Sarria Street had to be closed to motorists only a few days before the concert date.

NnG promotions had also promised the council that scaffolding had to be erected in a certain particular manner, thereby enabling Sarria Street to remain accessible to traffic. This, however, was not the case and one could easily notice that, by closing Sarria Street in a certain manner, the concert organisers stood to increase the number of Lm35 seats available. Who was responsible for giving this advice to the organisers? Floriana council categorically denies that it ever issued a permit to NnG promotions allowing the latter to block Sarria Street, enabling them to erect an enclosure. Any implication in this sense, as made by the correspondent, is a falsehood.

However, it still remains to be seen whether the correspondent will pluck up enough courage to condemn the entities truly responsible for having given permission to NnG promotions to close Sarria Street at this company's leisure and for the private benefit of this company.
