The International Council of Women (ICW) General Assembly will be held in Perth, Western Australia, between August 31 and September 5. NCW president Grace Attard will be representing our Council.

This important triennial meeting has a full programme, which includes ICW Board meetings, election of president, treasurer and vice-presidents and election of Board Members.

The themes proposed for the next three years are The Girl-Child, and Water Security and Its Management for the Eradication of Poverty.

One of the most important sessions deals with the discussion and approval of the resolutions, which were submitted by various national councils.

The topics to be discussed include the protection, promotion and support of breast feeding and maternity leave; women and drug abuse; the fight against trafficking in women and girls; education of parents (submitted by NCW Malta); violence against women and children in armed conflict; water security and its management in the eradication of poverty; forced early marriages of children in exchange for financial agreements; and representation of women at all decision-making levels. NCWs of each country will take measures to ensure that these issues are dealt with at national level during the next three years. This important meeting is a unique opportunity to share ideas and to strengthen networks with NCWs from all the continents.

NCW would like to thank HSBC Bank Malta plc and Maltacom plc for sponsoring its participation in this important assembly.
