Several entries from Gozo received the Sebbah Pajjizek awards presented during a ceremony, held last Friday week in Vassalli Hall at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta.

The awards seek to involve each citizen who can contribute to make our country more beautiful and cleaner. Another objective is to change the mentality on civic pride, public cleanliness and embellishment. Sebbah Pajjizek also seeks to raise awareness on the importance of a cleaner environment so that residents, tourists and generations alike can enjoy it.

Nadur council received four awards and placed second in two other categories.

The Ta' Kenuna Garden in Nadur won the enclosed public gardens category, the Ta' Hali playing field placed first in the playing fields surrounded by trees/plants/flowers category. Nadur council was awarded first prize for its participation in the residential and commercial community initiative, as well as for its initiative for a better locality.

Nadur's Wied ta' Grejgel placed second in the new category on valleys introduced this year to commemorate the International Year of Eco-Tourism and in the category for the best kept public gardens with playing fields.

Qala's Hondoq ir-Rummien Bay was voted the best kept rocky beach, that is accessible and popular for swimming, and Triq Martino Garces, in Ghajnsielem, placed second in the promenades category. Xaghra council placed second in the non-urban areas category.

The prizes and certificates were presented by Dr Tonio Borg, Minister for Justice and Home Affairs. Nadur mayor Dr Chris Said was presented with Lm2,350, Qala mayor Paul Buttigieg was presented with Lm350 and the Ghajnsielem and Xaghra councils were awarded Lm200 and Lm233.30, respectively.
