The Malta Maritime Authority has designated a new swimmers' zone in Sliema, opposite St Julian's Bay beneath Independence Garden.

All mariners are prohibited from navigating mechanically propelled sea craft or sailing boats, including wind surfers, surfboards and aqua scooters within this new zone.

The authority has placed a number of marker buoys in order to determine the exact location and boundary of this new swimmers' zone.

Mariners are advised to navigate with caution and slow speed when in the vicinity of the area.

The delineation of swimmers' zones is the main initiative undertaken by the authority as part of its annual summer safety at sea campaign.

The zones are marked by clearly visible yellow and red buoys placed at 50 metre intervals.

The new swimmers' zone in Sliema is the latest addition to another 18 zones earmarked for the summer season.

In Malta, the zones are situated at Golden Sands, Ghajn Tuffieha, Mellieha Bay, Paradise Bay, next to St Paul's Bay's breakwater, commonly known as Veccja, and next to the spot known as ta' l-Ghazzelin, Imgiebah Bay, St Julian's and Birzebbuga.

In Gozo, they are situated at Ramla l-Hamra, Xlendi Bay, Marsalforn, Qbajjar, Hondoq ir-Rummien and San Blas bays and at the Blue Lagoon, Santa Marija and San Niklaw bays in Comino.
