I refer to Dennis Asciak's letter "Trigger-happy" (July 17).

Mr Asciak was very unfair to accuse Naxxar local council of "grabbing the opportunity to make a quick buck" during the latest Malta International Trade Fair. The local wardens were only doing their duty and only booked traffic offenders. The fact that there are thousands of cars concentrated in one zone does not justify breaking the law.

In fact, to park correctly you do not have to be familiar with an area but should be familiar only with the street code or, rather, with most of the common traffic regulations. Indeed, most of the offences occurring during the trade fair period were those related to parking close to corners, parking on yellow lines, parking round traffic islands and obstructions.

Mr Asciak may wish to note that local enforcement at Naxxar is not administered directly by Naxxar local council but by the northern joint committee made up of six councils including Naxxar. The same applies to any income and expenditure derived from the service.

I would also like to question how Mr Asciak came to the conclusion that Naxxar "local council is supposed to have been happy that thousands of people visited the fair, making Naxxar the centre of attraction in Malta". I would like to inform Mr Asciak and The Times readers that Naxxar is in itself a centre of attraction by nature, with several venues and historical places going back thousands of years.

The fact is that the trade fair only causes great inconveniences to residents through air and noise pollution, obstruction of passage ways (both public and private), illegal parking, traffic jams and littering.

The least any non-Naxxar resident could do to alleviate some of the consequential problems is to respect law and order. Those not respecting regulations will be booked!
