The 55th edition of the FISEC Games came to a close yesterday in Salamanca, Spain, with a ceremony attended by all participating athletes and delegates.

During the activity, international FISEC Games chairman Jose Mateo Caneda passed on the symbolic blue flag to Bro. Martin Borg, head of our FISEC organisation committee who will be responsible for next year's edition in Malta.

The Maltese athletes, due to arrive in Malta this morning, finished with an overall tally of 18 medals - five gold, six silver and seven bronze.

Yesterday, the Futsal team won the play-off for third place after beating Spain 12-5. The scorers for bronze medallists Malta were Andre Schembri (5), Edward Herrera (3), Dyson Falzon (2), Steve Borda and Andrew Spiteri.

However, there were negative results from the volleyball and basketball scenes. The boys' volleyball team lost to Portugal 3-2 and the basketball girls' team were beaten by Flanders 59-34.

Malta's top performer in Salamanca was undoubtedly athletics sprinter Celine Pace. She won the 100m and 200m races in convincing style, also going on to establish a new record in the 200m race - 24.92s. Pace was also a gold medal winner in the 4x100m relay race.

The other two gold medals for Malta also came from track and field events - the boys 4x100m relay quartet and Edwin Zammit in javelin.
