The Labour Party's councillors' section has written to local councils' association president Ian Micallef confirming the party's position against councils having the power to introduce local taxes.

The councillors were making their statement with reference to a report on councils prepared by the representatives of the Council of Europe, which was evaluating the operation of councils in view of the Council of Europe charter.

The Labour councillors said it was clear that the authors of the report were making particular emphasis on this point of political controversy so the section was asking the association to make its position clear in discussions.
