Pigeon fancier Mark Farrugia has won first prize in a Grand Prix held in Portugal over the last weekend.

His pigeon won the last and most prestigious of eight races while, overall, Maltese competitors from the Malta Federation of Racing Pigeon Clubs won the fourth placing from among 27 countries.

Mr Farrugia's pigeon, which came first in a 450-kilometre race, was auctioned according to regulations. It was bought for €1,500 by a Portuguese, Joaquim Guedes.
