Guides feel the sting in natural site clean-up

Two Siggiewi guides needed medical attention after they were attacked by a swarm of aggressive bees while cleaning up Gebel Ciantar, in the limits of Dingli.

Diana Zammit and Christabel Pace were stung by the bees in an old water heater, Simone Mizzi, public relations official of Din l-Art Helwa, said.

The activity, last Saturday, was organised by Din l-Art Helwa with the aim of clearing up the area from rubbish dumped there, including the water heater from which the bees emerged when they were disturbed.

The clean-up was organised with the help of Siggiewi Scout Group and Siggiewi council.

Din l-Art Helwa said Gebel Ciantar, overlooking Fawwara was one of the most important natural areas of the island. Its rehabilitation is one of a number of environmental enhancement projects to be undertaken by the national trust in partnership with the Malta Environment and Planning Authority and local councils.

Din l-Art Helwa is planning to rebuild rubble walls, place stone benches and create interpretation panels at two vantage points which will give the public details about the historical and archaeological features that still abound in the area.

George Attard Manché, leading the project for Din l-Art Helwa, appealed to the public to make proper use of the area.
