Wanderers U-16 team in Bulgaria

Andrei Agius best midfielder

The U-16 team from the Sliema Wanderers FC nursery recently travelled to Bulgaria to take part in the Nikola Kotkov Tournament, a competition organised by Sport Academy Lokomotiv 101.

In all, eight teams participated with Sliema being the only overseas side in the competition. They were pitted in one of the two groups along with hosts Lokomotiv 101, Slavia Sofia and Levski Sofia.

The Wanderers, under the charge of coach Mario Mifsud, performed well but, as the results clearly indicate, they lost their three matches with marginal scores. They were beaten by Lokomotiv 101 1-0, Slavia Sofia 2-1 and Levski Sofia 2-1.

The Wanderers' venture in Sofia ended on a bright note, though, as their promising player Andrei Agius was named best midfielder of the tournament.

Presentations were held after the last match. Lokomotiv 101 won the tournament after beating CSKA Sofia 1-0 in the final.

Distributing the trophies was Trayko Sokolov, the former Floriana coach who runs his own football business in Bulgaria through Talev Agency.
