An appreciative crowd yesterday turned up at the Vittoriosa Lawn Tennis Club for the last day of the Samsung International Open, where the men's and women's finals were played.
The women's contest pitted together the experienced Sarah Wetz with the upcoming Rosanne Dimech while B-rated Italian Riccardo Ghedin faced Malta national team player Marcus Delicata.
Played on the Maltacom Court, Dimech prevailed in straight sets 6-1 6-2 thanks mainly to her perfect strokes and determined play throughout. In the end, she was rewarded for her more enthusiastic approach to the game.
Ghedin found stiff resistance from Delicata in the opening set which went the visitor's way after a tie-break. The second set was a mere formality though as the Maltese player ran out of energy with Ghedin hitting winners from all quarters.
Prize-money and trophies were presented to the winners by Max Castagna, Samsung representative in Malta.
