The Lower Barrakka gardens were re-inaugurated yesterday by Infrastructure Minister Ninu Zammit following extensive restoration of the arches and the installation of new paving, new lighting and a general upgrade. Work was also carried out on the monument to Sir Alexander Ball.

The Lower Barrakka was first opened to the public in 1900. The arches were originally erected in 1661.

The garden was restored on the initiative of the Valletta Rehabilitation Committee and Valletta Council. Mr Zammit said the Lower Barrakka was one of three gardens in Valletta being restored by the VRP.

Structural works have also been carried out on the steps at the Upper Barrakka Gardens and other improvements will be taken in hand in November.

Embellishment work had also being carried out at Hastings garden.

The minister said that since the VRP was set up 15 years ago it had spent Lm5 million in restoration projects in Valletta.
