Alternattiva Demokratika's spokesman on the EU and international affairs, Arnold Cassola, said he had noted with satisfaction that the Maltese government was seeking to tap EU funding sources for infrastructural projects, such as the building of an eight-kilometre tunnel at sea level linking the Malta Freeport and the Grand Harbour.

The aim of the project is to speed up the handling of cargo between the two ports.

Professor Cassola said it was good that the Maltese government was trying to take immediate advantage of the opportunities offered by EU membership. "However, it is important that all projects proposed by the Maltese government, especially in the sensitive field of transport, conform to the highest social and environmental standards, also taking account of the fact that transport costs in Malta's ports are high due to monopolistic practices."
