President Guido de Marco yesterday heaped praise on engineering students when he inaugurated this year's engineering projects exhibition at the University of Malta.

The impressive display of projects by the students represents months of hard work, perseverance and ingenuity.

Prof. de Marco spoke to the undergraduates about their achievements and inspirations.

There are 67 exhibits, ranging from design and construction of manufacturing, communication and electronic systems to the development of surface engineering and heat treatment processes.

Heat treatment processes enable industrial firms to improve tool life and the quality of finished products.

The exhibition serves as a showcase for final-year students.

Faculty dean Maurice Grech explained that the projects reflected the areas of development and research interests of the academic staff within the six departments of the faculty.

The students take their tutor's proposal, and add on a lot of hard work and enthusiasm, not to mention their ingenuity, to give projects their own twist.

The department of electric power and control, together with researchers from the departments of mechanical engineering and communications and computer engineering have carried out development work related to an electric car, Professor Grech said.

Other students have carried out projects on sustainable sources of energy, image processing, software development, acoustics, design of a multi-sensory robot hand, and pulsejet among others. External examiners have remarked consistently on the high level of final-year projects and the engineering course in general.

Graduates from the faculty of engineering over the last decades have proved themselves in the field and distinguished themselves when furthering their studies overseas.

The exhibition is of particular interest to young persons considering a career in engineering as well as technical staff from industry.

Visitors will be able to see the commitment and academic preparation of students and learn more on the faculty's involvement and collaboration with industry.

The exhibition will be open to the public today and tomorrow from 5 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 8.30 a.m. till 12.30 p.m.
