The capacity of Malta's private yacht marinas is to increase by another 230 berths, to over 1,500, with the launch of the Grand Harbour Marina forming part of the Cottonera project, Tourism Minister Francis Zammit Dimech said yesterday.

Last year, marinas run by the Malta Maritime Authority marinas catered for 1,024 berths while private marinas catered for just 240.

Speaking during a reception related to the Malta-Tunisia Regatta, Dr Zammit Dimech said the government wanted to turn Malta into a yachting centre with all the modern amenities in order to compete with similar places in the Mediterranean.

Malta, he said, provided an important base for thousands of yacht owners who passed through the Mediterranean.
