Last Sunday, the Razzett tal-Hbiberija teamed up with the Malta Triathlon Association to organise a unique event - an integrated triathlon.
Social Policy Minister Dr Lawrence Gonzi opened the event. He said that sports is an important element to combat social exclusion of persons with disability. Minister Gonzi highlighted the importance of such activities, not just to raise awareness but also to encourage more participation in sports by persons with a disability.
This activity becomes more relevant since the year 2003 has been designated as the International Year for Persons with Disability.
This event was sponsored by Air Malta, Baxter and Island Hotels, who helped bring over athletes from the UK to take part.
Other local participants included members of the Physically Disabled Rehabilitation Facility in Kordin, the Torball association and members of the national triathlon team.
The aim of the activity was to create awareness of integrated sports and events for physically disabled persons.
Nathan Farrugia, representing Ir-Razzett tal-Hbiberija, commented that "not enough is being done in this field and we feel that events like these will help bring out enough athletes to create a paralympic team."
ASPIRE UK was represented by Brian Carlin, and disabled athlete Chris Brogan. Their experience is being lent to the Razzett team to develop programmes for sports for the disabled. Following the triathlon's success, the two will be returning to Malta to organise training camps for disabled athletes, if there is a demand. With over 50 participants, the event drew a crowd, who where impressed with the wheelchair athletes' energy and ability.
There are many sports that disabled persons could excel in, but there has to be a proper organisational structure and set up. The Razzett's purpose-built facility is the ideal place for an Integrated Sports Club.
The national triathlon association was clearly thrilled to have their national athletes rubbing shoulders with youngsters, attempting their first ever triathlon. They have a number of beginner events in the pipeline and hope to boost the triathlon's image.
Medals were given to all participants. However, finishing times will not be published as the event was aimed at increasing awareness, rather than competition.
