American Ambassador Anthony Gioia was invited to address the Malta Federation of Industry (FOI) Council last month.
Following a brief introduction on the Federation by FOI president Anton Borg, Mr Gioia outlined the US Embassy's role and stated that, following Malta's decision to become part of the European Union, the Embassy was studying possibilities of trying to encourage medium-sized US manufacturing firms to set up an assembly plant in Malta.
Mr Gioia, who was accompanied by the embassy's commercial officer John Mariz, outlined the various advantages Malta has to offer to the American investor, including an English-speaking workforce; as well as increased business due to the country's vicinity to the African and Mediterranean regions. Other topics that were raised during the meeting related to US shipping contracts; possible areas for US FDI growth in Malta; and double taxation treaties.
