Police identify rape suspect

The police are seeking a Libyan man who is suspected of the rape and injury of the 55-year-old woman at Floriana early on Sunday morning.

The suspect is aged in his early 20s, is six feet tall, well built and of a dark complexion.

He has short hair, dark eyes and full lips and is clean shaven.

The police, who yesterday also issued a photograph of the suspect, said that although the man they were looking for was known by the name of Aroud and the surname Ashref Mohamed, he may be using a different name.

The police appealed to anyone having information on the man to phone the investigators on 2122 1111. The police said they would respect the anonymity of callers.

Sources said the police dug up the photograph from their records.

The woman was brutally raped in the subway close to Portes-des-Bombes early on Sunday morning. She had to undergo surgery after the offender kicked her and fractured her leg.

As part of their investigations the police photographed a number of men, most of them foreigners, who fitted the description of the person suspected of the offence.

The photographs were shown to the victim.

The police had also produced an identikit of the rapist on the basis of information given to them by the victim.
