Agriculture - Farmers

What is the EU policy on agriculture?

The EU policy for agriculture is known as common agricultural policy (CAP). This policy was successful for European farmers because it provided them with financial support. But it was also controversial because it soon started to absorb increasing chunks of the EU budget and led to over-production. The EU's objectives in the area of agriculture are:

¤ To increase agricultural productivity

¤ To ensure a fair standard of living for the agricultural population

¤ To stabilise markets

¤ To guarantee regular supplies

¤ To ensure reasonable prices in supplies to consumers

Reforming the CAP is one of the primary objectives of the current Agricultural Commissioner Frans Fischler.
