Enemalta Corporation said yesterday that on Tuesday it recorded the highest summer peak demand of 387 megawatts, an increase of 5.4 per cent on the peak demand of 367 megawatts established on August 6 last year which then was a record.

The August 6 peak had already been exceeded by three per cent on Monday when demand reached 379 megawatts.

The hot weather in the last few days has pushed up the demand for electricity and also caused a number of faults in the distribution system.

The corporation said that following repairs carried out throughout Tuesday night, cables that were damaged on Monday evening were repaired and re-energised. As a result, no more power interruptions are expected in the central and southern parts of Malta.

Works on the new power cable that was being installed between Targa Gap, limits of Mosta, and Burmarrad, were progressing as planned.

The cable installation work was expected to be completed by Sunday. The new cable will supply power to Bugibba, Qawra and St Paul's Bay.

The corporation added that there could be further interruptions to the service in these localities until Sunday when all the necessary works were expected to be completed.

This was due to the excessively high electricity demand being experienced in Bugibba, Qawra and St Paul's Bay, especially in the evening, the corporation said.
