The ramparts of the private quarters of the knights at Fort St Angelo will be the venue for an outdoor concert by the world famous Belgian Rubio Quartet, to be held today at 9 p.m.

The concert is being organised by the Manoel Theatre, under the patronage of President Guido de Marco and the Grand Master of the Sovereign and Military Order of Malta, Fra Andrew Bertie.

The Rubio Quartet ranks among the elite of today's young string quartets. Since its formation in 1991, it has won international recognition for innovative programming and performances of the 20th century repertoire, making a speciality of the works of Shostakovich.

Dirk Van de Velde and Dirk Van den Hanwe (violins), Mark Sonnaert (viola) and Peter Devos (violincello) perform on instruments by the late world famous violin-maker David Rubio, from whom the quartet takes its name.

Their fame has spread internationally - this year alone will take them to Australia, South Africa, the US, Abu Dhabi and various European capitals.

The Rubio's programme at Fort St Angelo will consist of three of the most attractive works for string quartet, namely Schubert's String Quartet op. 94, Shostakovich's Second String Quartet and Dvorak's "American" String Quartet.

A free shuttle service will be provided to take patrons from the ample parking area by the quayside directly to the venue.

Reservations for the concert may be made from the Manoel Theatre Booking Office, tel. 2124 6389, fax 2123 7340. The remaining tickets will be sold at the door.
