Hot chilli products containing Sudan Red 1 will not be allowed into Malta following an emergency ban imposed by the European Commission on the advice of the standing committee on the food chain and animal health.

After consulting with the Food Safety Commission, the Department of Public Health has notified importers that imports of hot chilli products will only be allowed on the local market on certification from the competent authority of the exporting country, that the products have been analysed and certified to be free from Sudan Red 1.
