The number of permits issued for foreigners to buy property in Malta jumped last year to 464 from 345 the year before, according to information given in parliament by Finance Minister John Dalli.

He told Mr Charles Buhagiar (MLP) in reply to a parliamentary question that 155 permits were issued in 1998, 202 in 1999 and 296 in the year 2000.

The minister said 273 permits were issued this year up to the end of May.
