Although we are members of the Faculty of Science at the University of Malta, we are writing in our personal capacity to comment on the article "Analytical objectives" signed 'Pro-Science' that appeared on the University page (The Sunday Times, June 22).

This article gives a short outline of the history of science education at the University of Malta which fails to acknowledge the contribution of those of us who were employed as part- or full-timers with the University during the time the Faculty of Science was abolished but who still kept the flag of science flying in spite of the difficult circumstances of those days.

While "Pro-Science" is correct to laud the efforts of the Department of Pharmacy in creating the B.Pharm. Tech. course, he/she should not forget that even before this course was set up, some of us were teaching science and conducting scientific research within the then Department of Mathematics and Science which at the time formed part of the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering.

As "Pro-Science" correctly says, the Department of Chemistry within the Faculty of Science has an excellent international standing. However, there are other Departments within the Faculty of Science that also have an international reputation, as a short review of the University Web-pages will show.
