As Malta basked in desert temperatures yesterday, thousands of residents and workers were left fuming in a two-and-a-quarter hour power cut in the Sliema area.

Enemalta explained that a turbine and a boiler at the Marsa power station stopped operating at 10.45 a.m., resulting in power cuts in parts of Gzira, San Gwann, Kappara and Msida.

Corporation workers immediately got to work and managed to restore power just after 1 p.m.

Enemalta said it was investigating the cause of the power cut.

Soaring temperatures have led people to switch their air conditioners, fans and refrigerators on to full power. The maximum temperature yesterday reached 35°C.

Traffic at particular junctions in San Gwann, Sliema and Kappara was chaotic after the power cut caused traffic lights to fail.
