The Akkademja tal-Malti has expressed grave concern over the official Maltese translation of the draft EU constitution and offered its assistance to remedy the situation.

"The media reports that the Maltese version is littered with errors are very serious indeed. And its subsequent withdrawal means that the draft European constitution is no longer available in Maltese, which makes it the only EU official language not represented at the EU council's general secretariat," it said.

However, the Akkademja welcomed news that the EU secretariat had already taken the necessary steps to ensure that the errors in the Maltese version were corrected and that action was being taken against those responsible.

The Akkademja offered its assistance in the translations.

It also insisted that there must be a structure to filter selection of translators, interpreters, proofreaders and anyone involved in the language, and to monitor and vet all translated material before publication.
