A 50-hour charity car wash marathon managed to raise about Lm3,000 in aid of the St Patrick's home for boys and the Dominican fathers in Albania by yesterday afternoon.

The marathon, held at the Msida marina by the Grupp Zghazagh Nazzarenu, started on Friday at 6 p.m. and came to a close yesterday at 8 p.m.

A steady flow of cars throughout the day and night got washed and polished for the princely sum of Lm1.50, but many car owners donated more than the amount due.

Over 600 cars were washed by about 100 volunteers, aged between 18 and 30, 25 of whom worked on six-hour shifts throughout the marathon.

It was the third time the voluntary group organised a car wash - although the others did not exceed 36 hours - and the second time the proceeds went to the St Patrick's home.

The major drawback this year was the intense heat, said main organiser Eman Azzopardi.

More donations can be made to HSBC account number 002086569050 and to BoV account number 40012580921, which are open until Friday .
