The final phase of the U-14 tournament, organised by the Malta Students Sports Federation (MSSF) with the assistance of the Malta Handball Association, was played at De La Salle College recently.
St Aloysius, San Andrea, San Anton and hosts De La Salle, qualified from the preliminary phase.
In the opening matches, St Aloysius beat San Andrea 9-5 while San Anton lost to De La Salle 16-8. However, San Anton bounced back to claim a surprise victory over St Aloysius 10-9 as De La Salle clinched a 10-5 win over San Andrea.
In the last two matches, San Anton and San Andrea were involved in an exciting 10-10 stalemate while De La Salle showed their true mettle by beating St Aloysius 11-9 to win the title. They ended on top of the standings with nine points followed by San Anton on four, St Aloysius on three and San Andrea one.
The De La Salle U-14s have thus emulated their U-16 counterparts who earlier this year had won the MSSF competition in their category.
David Azzopardi, MSSF president, said that such tournaments enhance the students' opportunities to play handball and hopefully serve them as a launching pad for a very successful career in the sport.
He added that interest in handball is always on the increase. This, he reckoned, was a very positive factor when looking ahead towards the future of the game in Malta.
