An appeal court has increased from Lm100 to Lm500 the fine imposed on a man for employing people who did not have a work permit.

Dennis Mallia was originally fined Lm100 for employing foreigners without a work permit to work in a quarry situated in the limits of Zurrieq on and before May 19, 2001.

But the Attorney General appealed on the grounds that the law stated that a person found guilty of the crime could be fined not less than Lm500 but not more than Lm1,000. Chief Justice Vincent DeGaetano upheld the appeal.
