On behalf of Floriana local council I would like to state the following with reference to J.M. Portelli's letter (May 27).
Floriana local council has already had the occasion in the recent past to explain that it is aware of the achievements of the late Joseph J. Mangion in the field of dentistry and of his attachment and contribution to his home town, Floriana.
The local council has also expressed its approval for a fitting commemoration of this eminent Florianite, and for various reasons, it is more inclined to support the splendid initiative proposed by the late Prof. Mangion's wife to erect a monument in his honour than having a street named after him.
Since the last correspondence on this matter appeared in The Times, the mayor himself, as promised, has contacted a member of the Mangion family to offer the council's help in moving this project forward.
The council has also approved the proposal that any eventual monument will be erected in the recently inaugurated and totally refurbished Sir Luigi Preziosi Gardens.
