Sandra Caruana, a 30-year-old mother of two, is fighting for her life after she was stabbed in the chest in a family quarrel at her home in Zejtun yesterday morning, the police said.
The woman's husband Paul, 32, is being held in connection with the incident.
Police sources said the man went to the Corradino Civil Prisons to speak to his sister, who is employed there, before he gave himself up to the police.
The police said the first report to reach the Zejtun police station was that a woman had been taken to the Paola health centre suffering from stab wounds.
According to preliminary investigations, her wounds were caused by a pointed instrument after an argument with her husband, the police said.
The stabbing took place at her house in Xandru Farrugia Street at about 9.30 a.m.
Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera appointed a team of experts to help conduct an inquiry.
Inspector Charles Bartolo of the Criminal Investigation Department and District Inspector Joe Agius are investigating.
