Lufthansa German Airlines have extended the use of electronic ticketing (ETIX) from their sales office to local agents after the airline was satisfied with the use of the system in Malta.

Lufthansa became the first airline to introduce the facility in Malta in June last year.

Introduced in 1996, the facility is used for 250 destinations in nearly 30 countries.

Passengers book their flight by phone giving the number of the customer number or credit card. The ticket is then stored in the Lufthansa computer system and at the airport ETIX passengers check-in with their Lufthansa customer or credit card. A boarding pass and baggage tag is then issued in the usual way.

Another advantage of electronic tickets is the check-in procedure: passengers can use the automated check-in terminals for self-check in avoiding queues.

Automated check-in terminals are available in about 150 international airports but not Malta as the size of the island does not justify the large expense needed to install the terminal, an airline spokesman explained.
