A group of workers from the Ministry of Resources and Infrastructure yesterday started removing wild plants that had sprouted out of the mortar that binds the massive walls of St James Cavalier, in Valletta. The plants, particularly caper plants, break up the mortar with their sinewy roots, paving the way for rain water to seep through, damaging the stone work. The workers start early and stop by mid-morning to avoid the intense heat of the sun.
