The first annual Bugibba Arts Festival, organised by St Paul's Bay local council, in collaboration with the Malta Tourism Authority and the Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association, is ushering in summer 2003 on June 20, 21 and 22.
The festival's main aim is to promote authentic Maltese talent in various spheres such as arts, crafts, music, drama and dance.
The Bugibba Arts Festival is highlighting the panoramic views of St Paul's Bay to create a unique festival experience and an enjoyable event for the family.
Artists and artisans are to demonstrate their skills along the promenade and perform on a stage in Bay Square in Bugibba.
The programme also includes street theatre at regular intervals, as well as painting and photography exhibitions in various hotels.
The festival is being inaugurated by Tourism Minister Francis Zammit Dimech at Bay Square on June 20 at 8 p.m.
The opening night includes the town crier's decrees, as well as dancing by children at Bay Square, a Scouts bagpipes troupe display and parade, concerts by the Euro Academy Youth Orchestra and the Amadeus Chamber Choir and drama by the Playhouse Theatre Company, followed by a fjakkolata.
Among the highlights on June 21, art and artisan work is being displayed along the Bugibba promenade, and street theatre is being repeated at regular intervals.
A traditional Maltese wedding re-enactment is also being staged and the Rosanna Maya Dance Troupe are performing in Bay Square, followed by the live music of the band Stroke 5.
The British Residents Bay Watchers are performing Show Time and other dance shows are scheduled to fill the day on Saturday and Sunday.
Exhibits are being displayed and auctioned in Bay Square and African music, song and dance performed, followed by operatic and popular songs by the choir of the University of the Third Age. The Pauleen School of Dance is performing Cabaret Art exhibitions are being held at the New Dolmen, Crown, Primera, Topaz, Gillieru, Qawra Palace and Sol Suncrest Hotels.
Wignacourt Tower, managed by Din l-Art Helwa, will be open to the public on June 20 from 9.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and on June 21 and 22 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Entrance is 50 cents and free for members and children under 16.
